Buying a Car This Year? Get Your Insurance Ready First
Year-end sales are one of the most popular times to buy a car. Before you sit down in the finance office, get your insurance price. The dealer will need proof of coverage before you drive away, and the cost of insuring a car can change which car makes sense for your budget.
What the dealer and lender will ask for
- Proof of insurance before you leave the lot. We can send it the same day.
- Comprehensive and collision if you finance or lease. Lenders require them, usually with a maximum deductible, often $500 or $1,000.
- California minimum liability is $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for injuries, plus $15,000 for property damage. Most people with a new car need more than the minimum to protect their savings.
Coverage to think about for a new car
- Gap coverage. A new car can be worth less than your loan in the first years. If it's totaled, gap coverage pays the difference between what the car is worth and what you still owe. It is often cheaper through your insurance than through the dealer.
- New car replacement. Some insurers will replace a totaled new car with a new one of the same make and model for the first year or two. Ask us which companies offer it.
- Rental reimbursement and roadside help so you're not stuck while the car is in the shop.
Already insured? Call before you buy
Many auto policies give you a short window to add a newly bought car, but the number of days and the coverage during that window depend on your policy. Adding the car the day you buy it is the safe move. It's also a good time to check bundle and multi-car discounts.
Common questions
Will a new car cost more to insure? Often yes, because repairs and parts cost more and lenders require full coverage. Safety features and bundling can bring the price down.
Can I get a quote before I pick the exact car? Yes. Send us two or three cars you're considering and we'll price each one.
Do I need a California license to get a policy? Tell us your situation and we'll find the right option.
